They have different placentas than ours and there is no mixing of blood between the mom and the baby. Their placenta does not allow larger molecules, like antibodies, to pass through them. Colostrum contains large amounts of antibodies and is the primary source of them for the newborn.

If the kids are refusing to nurse or there is not enough colostrum to go around, go to a local producer to obtain colostrum, or have it on hand before the dam will give birth. Freeze it if storing for more than 24 hours.

"Homemade colostrum" of any kind does NOT provide essential immunoglobulins found only from their mother. You are putting newborns at risk of severe disease with this post. PLEASE consider editing your post or removing it.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8249314516667844062.post-25991398936830891012023-06-21T06:41:18.386-05:002023-06-21T06:41:18.386-05:00I used a similar formula for three kittens that ma...I used a similar formula for three kittens that mama ignored. We had a baby goat born like 12 days ago, a beautiful hearted lady pulled in and said that there was a goat in distress in the field, we found a nanny that had given birth to a newborn (about the same size babies and thought this is probably the mom), we had to hold the goat down so the baby could nurse, a couple days later we found it was the wrong nanny, the right nanny's nipples we deflated by that time and she wanted nothing to do with feeding. Thank you for this recipe, I wish I had looked online earlier for this, before our goats started kidding. Just adopted two babies who were starved for their first 24 hours and our neighbours did nothing about it. I took them on and made a mix of cow milk and chamomile. They eat but are still very weak, I am so worried that not receiving colestrum and being starved will have had fatal results but a week on they are still giving it their best. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. (Forgot to mention the mother got bitten on the udder by a dog the year before and developed mastitis. And I would just feed it in place of their usual milk feed. So if they're being bottle fed twice a day, then just feed the colostrum 2x's a day. If you're switching them over to the colostrum for a few days, do keep a close eye out for scours if you're not adding in any slippery elm powder.
Goat Songhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15278454947449771253noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8249314516667844062.post-2550857148666360602013-04-27T21:57:16.095-05:002013-04-27T21:57:16.095-05:00Thanks for this, I'm getting lambs soon and ho...Thanks for this, I'm getting lambs soon and hoping they have already had their colostrum but you never know.
