I get asked a lot about what dewormers I use on my goats, and if there isn't a homemade deworming recipe. And, ta da! I actually do use a homemade dewormer that I love, so I thought I would share the recipe here for y'all. (and note: this recipe is not of my own making; the original writer of the recipe is Debbie Osborne.)
Herbal Goat Dewormer:
1 cup dry mustard seed powder.
Dry mustard seed powder. |
2 cups cut Thyme leaf.
Thyme leaf |
2 cups wormwood.*
Wormwood |
1 cup Black Walnut hull.*
Black Walnut hull |
2 cups chopped Sage leaf.
Chopped Sage leaf |
1 cup Minced Garlic.*
Minced Garlic |
2 cups Rosemary leaf.
Rosemary leaf |
1/2 cup chopped cloves.
Cloves |
1 cup Psyllium Seed powder.
Psyllium Seed powder |
2 cups Diatomaceous Earth (D.E.)*
Diatomaceous Earth |
Directions:
Mix all ingredients together and store in a glass jar. Keep in a cool, dark place.
You'll notice that some of the herbs have been marked with an asterisk (*), these are the most crucial ingredients, and if you're in a pinch you can make a cheater version of this dewormer with only the herbs that have been marked.
Dosages:
Sprinkle the mixture over their feed 2x's daily for seven (7) days straight.
A mature, standard sized goat needs 1 Tablespoon 2x's a day (so 2 TBSP per day).
Dwarf breeds need 1/2 Tablespoon 2x's a day (so 1 TBSP per day).
Standard sized kids receive the same amount as Dwarf breeds, and Dwarf kids should get roughly 1/3 to 1/2 the adult Dwarf amount.
If you find that your animals absolutely refuse to eat the mixture try mixing it with some brown sugar; that usually helps matters!
What's really nice is that this recipe can also be used for other animals: sheep, cattle, horses, camelids... But PLEASE NOTE: if you use this recipe for horses, you MUST take the Black Walnut powder out, as horses are sensitive to it and it can cause death if ingested.
You'll also notice that the ingredients are all highlighted. Clicking the links will take you directly to one of my favorite websites that I order bulk herbs from. :)
Do you have a favorite herbal recipe that you use on your livestock?

This is a great wormer recipe for non-pregnant goats. But, please use caution with some of these ingredients for pregnant does. The Wormwood, Cloves, and Thyme can and do cause a doe to abort their babies. I know this from experience.
Do you know if it would be ok with chickens and rabbits?
Good advice Brenda; I meant to post that this recipe wasn't good for preggo does, but it seem that I forgot to put that in somewhere...
However, I do think Thyme is safe for pregnant animals in small amounts. I use a pregnancy booster on my does and it has thyme in it.
Jazkabor, yes it is safe for rabbits (I have no idea on dosages though...) but I'm not sure how one would give it to chickens. I expect that if you could somehow convince them to eat it, it would be fine.
I give my chickens minced garlic, fresh pumpkin seeds and dandelion greens for worms. At least once a month. In the summer, I add organic Apple cider vinegar with the "mother" (brand name-Bragg) to their plastic fonts. Don't use it with metal as it will leach and corrode into the water.

Thanks so much for the herbal wormer recipe. We have chickens and llamas and we're adding goats soon. Note: Black Walnut Hull should not be used for equine or camelids (llamas). It will cause founder.
^Actually, the black walnut can cause death in equines.
What about giving it to dogs/puppies?
^ I don't think I would give this particular recipe to canines... Simply because I am not positive about the effects some of the herbs may have on a dog, which is a carnivore, versus an herbivore which this recipe was created for.
If you're looking for an herbal deworming recipe for canines, I would highly recommend Juliette De Bairacli Levy's book: http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Herbal-Handbook-Dog-Cat/dp/0571161154/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1366642273&sr=1-1&keywords=juliette+de+bairacli+levy
I own this book, and love it!
How long should this be administered? Or is it something you need to give them everyday?
I was looking into buying "Molly's" formula from Fiasco, but thought I would try making it myself. Hers you only give for 3 days every 6-8 weeks. Is this the same?
Thanks! I love making my own ... Everything! If possible!
I am also looking for how often to administer. 4x a year, yearly, bimonthly? I also use fiasco's wormer but have bought and mixed my own. Not sure to continue with what fiasco regimen is or what. Please help.
Familyof5, and Jennifer, I would administer the deworming blend just like the Fiasco formula: 3-5 days every 6-8 weeks. :)
Hi All - I've been following this thread, as I've also been wondering how often to give this worming recipe that I first saw on the Bulk Herb Store website: http://www.bulkherbstore.com/articles/debbie-osbornes-animal-worming-recipe. I wrote to the owners of the site and this is the reply I received from Grace Perry when I asked how much to give our two ponies (13.1hh and 14hh):
"You would give your ponies 1/4 a cup every morning and every night for 7 days. Some people would recommend de-worming every other month. But that would have to be your call."
Hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for sharing. Just a question about this recipe for pregnant does, do we just don't add wormwood and clover for them?

This looks like a great recipe. However, I already have natural 'para-rid' cleanse capsules. Could I use this for goats? Here are the ingredients:
Betel Nut 100mg
Garlic 80mg
Pumpkin Seed 60 mg
Cloves 50mg
Rhizoma Rhei 50mg
Green Hulled Black Walnut 50 mg
Wormwood 50mg
Mint 40 mg
Cellulase 20 mg
Thanks!
Actually, Molly has formula 1 and formula 2. Formula 1 you give for 3 days running, then for the following 7 weeks you give Formula 2 for one day. Animals receive herbal worming EVERY week. Formula 1 is not given to pregnant animals, they receive Formula 2 three days running when non pregnant animals are getting Formula 1. I use Molly's with good results.
Hallo:) Thanks for recipe:) Have you verified the effectiveness of this mixture by parasitological analysis of faeces? Thanks
Can I grind all of this up? My goats are really picky and even with brown sugar they will pick the cloves and rosemary out and not eat it.
Hi, found your recipe, and tweaked it with several ingredients from a friends recipe and made my own that is working quite well with my livestock.
Here it is: Homemade Herbal Animal Dewormer & Tonic
P.S. I ordered my herbs from Mountain Rose Herbs. Their herbs are less expensive than The Bulk Herb Store, and MRH has a much larger selection. :)

Do you use pumpkin & the seeds as a dewormer. We have had our goats for 4 months and it is time to deworm. I was told pumpkin with yogurt and molasses is a good way to take care of them. How much should each goat get to be effective?

Looks like most of these recipe suggestions are NOT good for pregnant does. What would you suggest for prego caprines?
Continue the good work. The sky is your limit.

This is actually not true. Black walnut herb in powder will not hurt a horse. It is used by thousands without harm. It's chemical wormers that cause death.
This is not true... Black walnut is fine for horses it just should not be fed in excess permanently.
I forgot to say it is black walnut wood chips in bedding that makes horses founder. I really wish you people would research before posting. It did the community no good to perpetuate these myths.
I am actually grateful to the holder of this scr888 download website who has shared this impressive post at at this time.
Interested if you are still using your herbal dewormer. Also, what is in your pregnancy tonic?
Thanks for sharing this informative information about Walnut Hull Powder with us. It's very helpful. Keep it up!
I have been using a formula called Verm Oust for almost 6 years which has black walnut hull and it hasn't killed my horses and some in the comments are claiming. I called and talked to the owner before using it and he informed me that the scientific evidence does not support the idea that consumption is harmful and sent me several papers to read. He also told me that most of their clients use it in horses or goats. So I began using it and my horses are healthier than ever.
I wish people would share only information they have researched because I was scared to death for several years to use black walnut hull in my horses.
all the best friends
Also sage is used to dry up milk when lactating so I would caution against using it then for animals as well. Some things that you can look into as alternatives is fennel, pumpkin seed powder. I see that Molly's uses mugwort and hyssop in her formula for pregnancy but I can't say either way because I don't have experience or research with those specifically
